Fluoride has been used in oral care formulation for decades, but this is beginning to change. More people are now choosing fluoride-free toothpaste, wanting shorter ingredient lists and a more natural approach to everyday oral care.
In the UK, fluoride-free toothpaste now accounts for an estimated 8 to 12% of the national oral care market by value, and the segment is growing at 8 to 11% a year against just 2 to 3% for toothpaste overall (IndexBox, 2026). For formulators, that means finding an active that can stand in for fluoride’s remineralising power.
A mineral built for the job
Hydroxyapatite is the main mineral component of natural tooth enamel and dentin, which is why it has become the leading fluoride-free active for remineralisation claims. Omyadent® 100 by Omya is built on their Functionalized Calcium Carbonate technology with around 90% Hydroxyapatite content in a co-crystallised, porous structure. Omyadent®100 by Omya starts life as natural ground Calcium Carbonate sourced from the Provence region of France, which then undergoes a proprietary treatment process to form a lamellar Hydroxyapatite scaffold. The result is an ingredient rich in calcium and phosphate, with the reactivity needed to support efficient enamel remineralisation and repair microscopic surface defects, leaving teeth smoother and whiter.
Performance data
Omyadent 100® by Omya has been tested for both remineralisation and enamel protection using pH-cycling models designed to simulate the demineralisation and remineralisation that happens in the mouth.
| Test | Comparison | Result |
| Surface microhardness recovery (6-day pH-cycling model) |
5% Omyadent® 100 vs micro Hydroxyapatite and nano Hydroxyapatite, with a 1450 ppm Sodium Fluoride benchmark | Substantially higher recovery than micro and nano Hydroxyapatite, and higher on average than the Sodium Fluoride benchmark |
| Enamel erosion under acid challenge (pH-cycling model) |
5% Omyadent® 100 vs untreated enamel | Reduced enamel loss over the course of the study |
| SEM imaging of bovine enamel | 5% Omyadent® 100 with 1450 ppm Sodium Monofluorophosphate vs untreated | Visibly smoother enamel surface after remineralisation |
Key benefits
- Excellent source of calcium and phosphate for enamel remineralisation
- Repairs microscopic enamel defects for a smoother, whiter surface
- Does not rely on nano sized particles
- Halal and Kosher certified
